What is a dog park?

A dog park is a contained public area where pet owners may allow their dogs to run off-leash.  It is really an off-leash exercise area.  The park is a legitimate recreational area for people as well as pets.  Dog parks create unique recreational and social outlets for dog owners.

A dog park creates a community center of activity where friends and neighbors gather to relax.

Benefits of an Off-Leash Dog Park

An off-leash dog park will allow a specific and secure area for people to let their dogs run legally.  This provides exercise for the dogs in a safe, enjoyable environment.  Dog owners find an off-leash park a sanctuary; they love to watch their animals run and romp and they feel it is essential to the dog’s health as well as theirs.

Benefits to dogs:

Studies have shown that dogs that exercise and are allowed to run freely are not as aggressive towards people as dogs that are under-exercised.    Allowing dogs to have an off-leash area socializes dogs.  It brings them in contact with other dogs and causes them to be less aggressive in each future encounter with dogs.  An off-leash park improves the mental state of dogs.  Many owners report that after a visit to a dog park their dog is less agitated and more relaxed and in general, nicer to be around.

Benefits to dog owners:

Dog owners report as many benefits to themselves as to their dogs.  A well adjusted, less aggressive dog is more enjoyable and easier to handle for the owner.  Research shows that benefits include:

·        Allowing people to meet and form bonds in the community

·        Allowing people to have the pleasure of watching their dogs at play

·        Contributing to the overall physical fitness of people by encouraging them to exercise with their dogs

·        Providing an opportunity for dog owners to enjoy the outdoors

Benefits to the community:

By providing socialization and exercise opportunities dogs are less aggressive and more social.  They are less likely to create a nuisance by barking excessively or destroying property.  Communities benefit in other ways that do not rest on the behavior of dogs.  These include:

·        Creating a social hub for communities

·        Socializing and exercising dogs in a safe environment

·        Promoting responsible pet ownership

·        Providing elderly and disabled owners with an assessable place to exercise their companions

·        Promoting public health and safety
